Crows
E,F
ASC CD113
E,F are Steven Earnshaw (synth, sax, clarinet) and Simon Fawcett (bass, loops)
E,F's fourth cd, 'Crows', offers up haunting sonic landscapes, ambient electronica punctuated with bursts of lyricism, pulsing bass, hypnotic loops, and anguished reeds (the ‘crows’ of the title).
The CD is a single track that draws the listener through several movements, terminating in an unsettling, subtly changing finale. Further snippets from this and previous CDs can be downloaded from the band’s website: http://www.sheffieldfawcetts.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/
The British Piano
a study of jazz and contemporary British piano music
ASC CD115
Music that explores the boundaries between Contemporary Jazz and Contemporary Classical composition and improvisation. Features pianists such as Mike Westbrook, John McCabe, Keith Tippett and Julian Hellaby, and compositions by Alan Rawsthorne and Robert Ramskill, in a documentary-style release.
Compositions/improvisations by Alan Rawsthorne, John Las, Robert Ramskill, Kenneth Leighton, Stephen Plews, Jonathan Gee, Keith Tippett and Daryl Runswick, Howard Riley, Vladimir Miller and Mike Westbrook.
"In this collection of piano music I am sharing my experiences and demonstrating the similarities and shared influences in jazz and contemporary classical musics. I am hoping to release a full CD of music by Robert Ramskill in spring 2010, and am delighted that this disc features his haunting Nocturne. He is also featured on ASC on our Julian Hellaby CDs Then Again and Chameleon, and is an excellent exponent of the two major themes of this label - contemporary classical music and modern/improvised jazz."
Stephen Plews.
The British Quartets 2
music by Linstead, Bourgeois and Beck
ASC CD117
Quartets composed by George Linstead, Derek Bourgeois and David Beck.
Performed by the New World String Quartet.
The New World String Quartet is formed from principal players of the New World Ensemble (NWE). The NWE is quickly establishing an enviable reputation as one of the most versatile groups in the UK.
This select group of musicians, many of whom are soloists in their own right, combine contemporary flair with a style and warmth of musical expression more usually associated with a gentler age. Their repertoire spans over five centuries, from Baroque Venice to present day Broadway. They recorded their first CD "Face to Face" in 2006, which was quickly followed by the first volume of British String Quartets.
