"...Plews is a strong pianist, whose powerful chording on the opening track 'Anywhere' recalls McCoy Tyner and Basie. It will be no surprise to listeners that Plews also leads a big band and is clearly used to playing forcefully. However, like Tyner (and Basie) he is also capable of considerable delicacy. 'Thick Withins', a rather fragmented ECM-like piece is evidence of that. But it is Walker who gets the limelight. There are people, who think that he is fast turning into one of the sharpest players around. On this showing they may well have a point. From his barnstorming on 'St. Magnus' to the bluesy, post-modern, late-night swing of the weirdly titled '3675 Alto Brea', there is a confidence to his playing that impresses immediately. As yet he may not have the gravitas of McLaughlin or Scofield but time will make that happen. Clyne and Tomkins are old hands and, if not
overworked in the solo department, give Plews' compositions the sound rhythmic base they need. They play with subtlety and sensitivity or with strength, as the music requires. The standout track is probably 'Tumuli' which actually succeeds in expressing some of the qualities of its title, but the writing and playing is strong throughout. Good release from an interesting label."
